Year 2 Unit 25: Studio Photography [Fashion & Product Photography]

Unit 25 Studio photography

Statement of Intent:

Following the duration of this unit I would hope to finish with a broad knowledge and practical understanding of how to operate a studio with purpose and I must be able to plan for and organise a studio shoot with a large, high quality & diverse portfolio of final images as evidence of achieving goals that I have set myself.

Unit 25: Studio Photography

Studio photography and Advertising: initial research

Companies spend a huge amount of money on Brand Identity and creating/ promoting Advertising that reflects the values or elicits an emotional impact that aligns with the ideas of Brand Identity.

Creating brand identity & recognition through Image became a staple of photography throughout the 20th century

Logo to brand = iceberg (there's more beneath the surface)

Studios: Small & Large, Amateur and professional

I could utilize Two photographic studio setup throughout the course of this unit , a large* semi-professional setup for fashion photography & a smaller home made studio utilizing more amateur forms of lighting.

Professional studio equipment & environment
Though not my studio setup, this is a more affordable and compact studio that I could set up for use on product photography.

Product & Fashion Photography

Practice images for Product Photography & the use of my limited light setup In my mini studio:

using warhammer 40K Tau as subjects I experimented with a macro studio and tested how to light a set up, gaging ways to balance the light. What I have found with practicing with my small setup are more extreme variables with depth of field having the focal width the thickness of a pin and Exposure being a nightmare to gage correctly without metering equipment with the greater zoom contributing to  under exposure & a need for lower shutter speed which itself leads into its own set of problems.

To expose these dark coloured figures properly I must first overexpose the rest of the image, in particular the white backgrounds, expose the white two times over and custom* set white balance in LED or Tungsten format.

Product Advertising using studio photography:

Task Intent:

for the product I plan to make a poster based around the themed product Lego Star Wars which would be fit for a studio setup.

I will be personally focusing on star wars clone wars lego as the product and creating an advertisement poster using compositing techniques in photoshop to create an image with large amount of action and components within. compositing helps with creating large ambitious images without the available resources, I will likely composit 10 or more images to create the poster.

light is inconsistent and backlight is needed for highlighting and contrast subjects though the light may be too hard

These Images are merely practice images with the purpose of testing some fundamental concepts of lighting, viewing angle and the effectiveness of depth of field. I use only use two lights currently but I will Invest in some more effective lights to create a better studio equivalent setup however in the meantime Ill use a longer exposure and Ill set a custom white balance.

subjects in white overexpose while darker subjects can still be under exposed, one would need to compensate for such variables using camera settings or using specialized film.

Looking at existing photographs of Lego & Minifigures:

For a long time the lego group has photographed its products for catalog and promotional purposes, it helps to use exact visual representations of products to ensure consumer confidence especially when marketing to a younger audience, a action pact image of the product can make it seem more desirable, appealing to one's imagination.
(look to classic Airfix for a more vintage example of visual aid to sell a product)

examples of legos post production process:

when the lego company go to photograph there products they use post production software to composite a large number of focused images together while also removing the rigging the figures are posed upon.

Lego Set Photography & Photos:

Fans of lego star wars create their own Product photography out of the inspiration they have for the starwars franchise & the creativity that comes with lego.

Fan Photograph

lego star wars fan photography is common in a community of people who create mocs and creations and wish to share their creations & also document what they have created so they know what they made after the physical creation has been disassembled.

Clone army customs created, displayed & sold custom clones back in the late 2000's

Clone army customs was part of the new wave fans of star wars & the lego sets that were licenced for lego, star wars was the first licensed property lego ever took on, this itself gives starwars lego a prestige that no other lego licensed set services can reach.

My Previous Attempts At Enthusiast Product Photography:

some of my photographs taken prior to this task

I myself have taken many images of lego as a product over the year however very few use compositing or digitally implemented effects

Be Cautious with mixing light sources with different colour temperature for when they overlap for when not colour balanced  the effect can often leave the image looking "muddy" and incorrectly exposed, it can also be deceptive for what looks correctly exposed on a LED screen looks underexposed when printed or on a monitor.

Fashion studio Photography:

Practice Images for fashion photography outside of a studio environment

these images were taken with fashion in mind to test my memory on such a subject, These images in their Unedited form show promise but a lack of a personal fashion bref in mind means these images have a lack of focus, metaphorically speaking & since none of these images were taken in a studio means that none of them qualify for a Studio focused Unit.

Through this exercise I noticed that I needed to find and use environments that I had far more control over because any area which is prone to change or invasion while your image is taken is a frustrating and disrupt the image as well as the subject.

Research: Photographer Inspirations

Bailey

David Bailey is a studio & fashion photographer who has operated from the mid 20th century to present best known for his work in Vogue magazine.
...
David Bailey was born in Leytonstone East London to Herbert & Sharon,Bailey, From the age of three he lived in East Ham where Bailey developed a love of natural history, and this led him into photography but due to having an undiagnosed dyslexia he experienced problems at school. He attended a private school, Clark's College in Ilford where he says they taught him less than the more basic council school. He left school on his fifteenth birthday, to become a copy boy at the Fleet Street offices of the Yorkshire Post. He raced through a series of dead end jobs, before his call up for National Service in 1956, serving with the Royal Air Force in Singapore in 1957. The appropriation of his trumpet forced him to consider other creative outlets, and he bought a Rolleiflex camera.

Bailey started his career in photography In 1959 when Bailey became a photographic assistant at the John French studio, and in May 1960, he was a photographer for John Cole's Studio Five, before being contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine later that year. Along with Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy, Bailey captured and helped create the 'Swinging London' of the 1960s: a culture of fashion and celebrity chic. The three photographers socialised with actors, musicians and royalty, and found themselves elevated to celebrity status. Together, they were the first real celebrity photographers, named by Norman Parkinson "the Black Trinity".

After this Bailey had become a become a household name and this is where he found himself shooting work for the best know names of each respective decade which passes, up to the present Bailey has been involved with Prolific magazines, creation of documentaries & commercials and with fashion design & photography.

Baileys Dynamic compositions & poses with stark backgrounds and dramatic lighting effects have inspired me to take a simile stylized rout when working in the studio.

Beaton

Cecil Beaton was a British studio photographer who carved a name for himself in fashion photography throughout the early to mid 20th century.
...
Sir Cecil Beaton was an artist, designer and photographer who was famous for his fashion and portrait photography during the mid 20th century, but he was best known for the work he did in the 1920s for magazines like Vanity Fair and Vogue, where he earned praise for his unique style of posing subjects and using unusual backgrounds.

Cecil's Interest in photography started at an early age with his fascination with newspaper picture postcards which demonstrated examples of early photography and by 1915 at only age 11 he got his first camera. During the interwar period Cecil was undecided with failed dives into academic but his interest in Photography and theater design was where his passions lie and eventually he got a job as a staff photographer in the US with Vanity Fair and Vogue where his talents in photography were honed and improved with his increasing professional experience in developing new techniques for posing, lighting and backgrounds in studio photography but this was cut short as he was fired from working from the magazines for the use of unfavourable language and he returned to Britain Humiliated.

A few years after working for the magazines he had created a large and complex portfolio of work which he got published in 1930 called The Book Of Beauty, the book of his work shot him to fame with his talent in portrait and studio photography being heavily praised and his Original style and technique used in his photography. After the rise in fame of his work he was regularly hired to do Photographic work for many prolific people of that period with businessmen, aristocrats, celebrities and even monarchs requesting him to Photograph for them, the most famous events Cecil photograph for was the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1953.

Prior to the Queens coronation, Cecil worked for the ministry of information during WW2, to record and photograph the effects of the conflict on Britain and the fighting in Africa and the Middle East. During this period of time Cecil developed a war photograph portfolio which was used in photos which reached US newspapers showing the shocking and disturbing situations Cecil had seen of the war in Europe and Its effects on the civilian population, for the war effort this was highly successful as propaganda which influenced the US joining the war & also redeemed Cecil on his blunder .

Cicils post-war career saw him take to stage & film design where he won praise and recognition for his role in his involvement in many productions and for his contribution in the film musicals Gigi in 1958 and My Fair Lady 1964. Cecil Postwar photographic career lead him to join British Vogue where he met and inspired a young David Bailey who himself became a prolific photographer, & Cecil also inspired the works of Angus McBean a British Photographer who's work was some of the finest of the post war period while still taking influence from photographers that preceded him. He continued to work in photography and  until his death in 1980 leaving a legacy and inspired the next generation of studio photographers.

Beaton's Photographic portfolio demonstrates a high level of understanding in spacing in image along with lighting, shape and posing techniques that compliment the the subject and their personality.
I take inspiration from Beaton's image compositions and posing of his subjects.

Task Intent:

For fashion photography I am creating 1920's & 30's inspired images which Im calling studio photography punk-noir. this was very experimental for I would have to use harsh light on a black background & I fear we don't have the facilities/ equipment at city of bristol which would accommodate my brief.

Organising the studio shoot
jotted down lighting ideas & Keywords
sketched poses & notes
Studio setup mixed notes
Few standout unedited Fashion Images:

out of 1028 images take during the shoots these images stand out in some way or another and sorting each image into a folder with the name of the subject, this still left me with about 600+ images, taking 5 images from each folder was my best be to cut the numbers of images down, this still left me with over 30 images, to slash down the remaining images I just edited what I wanted and used the edits as the final images.

Contact sheets:

Shoot setup 1

a snoot shoot with a honeycomb attachment was fitted as a one light set

Shoot setup 2

a 2 to 4 softbox light setup
Myself Informing my subjects of a pose I wanted the to try

In the final shoot I ended up working with a Pre Made studio set which was far from Ideal for what I had initially planned, to retool the set and arrange the lights more than I did would have take time and a lack of control/ organisation level that I hadn't accounted for.

I also took product photography as well Nior Fashion on the same day as a backup plan sins my product photos were maybe too ambitious, however I still have taken many product photos to account for potential shortcomings.

Fashion & product evaluation:

During for the shoot for this task I felt Like I had a grasp on what my strengths were while in a fashion studio setup but I acted to spontaneous with lack of focus sometimes which made shoot the feel confused, I ended up not following a lot of my plan after many failed attempts to explain my subjects what poses or actions I wanted them to do with a 50/50 success rate with poses and compositions, I  gradually became more confident at Directing the subjects and adapting a pose with they struggled with, for a few shots I left the subject to have a level of autonomy with more flexible direction leading to more natural and effective shots however this worked best with only one of the three subjects I used a models during the studio shoot. Cannibalising a previous setup was ok for a foundation but made it impossible to setup the 3 way lighting setup I had initially planned for but I still made the most with modifying the initial lighting arrangement to create the closest replication of what I initially planned.

Overall I feel I have learn a decent amount of practical experience working in a fashion studio setup,

Operating as an assistant Set Dresser for TV crew setup in portishead

Eyelights Ltd , Vision Studios, set dressing on Tue 28th/2n/2017 for Channel 4 program "Eat the week" (Partnered with Iceland)

My supervisor: Lucy

My roles during the day were;

Assistant on demand which included: Unpacking, Runner, Information, S
ourcing (butchers) & resource gathering, IKEA, Set-up, Errands (high trust), Examining Studio, Deliveries, Etc,

I found this work experiance an enlightening and very enjoyable experience that allowed me to gage a Idea of the roles and operations of a professional TV studio, I also was got the chance to examine and analyse an example of a Television set, this particular set was made to "replicate" a Kitchen environment. the studio itself is a heavily converted warehouse with plenty of space for a medium size TV production set & light/ heavy equipment, which there was plenty of with most of it consisting lighting & Rigging equipment. I would love any other opportunities along these lines in the future.

Work Experience- 28/02/2017

I enjoyed a day of work experience on a Channel 4 cooking show at a purpose built set in Bristol. I made sure I got to the set well in time of the start of the day in order to help set up the tea and coffee table. I was able to get to do a wide range of things including general runner duties, sourcing items from the local shops, using my local knowledge to assist the production team, unpacking boxes of set dressing and props, building furniture, making teas and coffee as well as other duties. I also worked alongside the crew and communicated information clearly ensuring I was as useful as possible during this day, they have said they would invite me back for the last day of filming to help the team pack down and for me to experience the atmosphere whilst they are turning over on camera.

800 word essay

Intro on studio

The Studio is a controlled environment for the creation of staged photographs which are isolated for influences and interference when out in an organic environment, a studio environment allows this flexibility with the use of many forms of artificial illumination with vast amounts customisable variables. In the studio organization and coordination is key, this can be between a portrait photographer and subjects or depending on the scale of the shoot a photographic team could be involved with each member of staff answering the directing photographer take responsibility their assigned variable, assisting to make the shoot or filming look or perform to specifications.

In such a dynamic and busy environment comes a large number of potential safety hazards or concerns that a studio photographer have to be aware of to ensure the safety of the subjects, other studio staff and themselves.
Similar to many other genre of photographics, Studio Photography covers a wide range of subjects and specialisms which can range from low skill snap photographs to highly Advanced Cinematography, this broadness allowed for many different disciplines to form some of which include Portraiture, Advertising, Fashion, Catalog, Product, Corporate & Many more forms.

...

Portraiture

Portraiture in photography is the use of lighting, backdrops, and poses to capture and convey the personality of a subject. As a one of the earliest and most common form of photography, portraiture is a highly developed and nuanced genera of photography which is primarily of the face of subjects with the predominant focus on facial features and expression. Portraiture photographers make the face the focus of emphasis in the photograph however this doesn't mean the is always the only element in the photograph, a portrait photographer has to also consider the subject's body posture posing and Background of the image, portraits photographers stage & rehearse the photo with their subject. This preparation means that a portrait photographer would have the subject posed at a specific angle and position, this preparation would be discussed between photographer and subject prior to the shoot.

Rankin as taken by Rankin & his Team

A portrait photographer would need a number of skills from a in depth understanding of photographic principles and social communication skills ... Fall in love with your subject ... a Head portrait photographer would need to be proficient in their ability in Directing the subject and staff under their responsibility. The equipment required for a fixed portrait studio consists of Lighting, Background, Metering, Props & Camera control apparatus.

The best portrait photographers start with a basic plan in their heads or noted down with room for flexibility as to anticipate the unpredictable nature of photography with the knowledge that some of the best moments being the spontaneous and the unplanned.

Fashion

The fashion Industry has used photography in the display and advertisement of their garments and produce for many years and defined innovation in studio photography, this genre of studio is fashion photography. Fashion as a genre of studio photography is by far the most well known, It has many prolific names of photography associated with it including such names as Cecil Beaton & David Bailey and the photographic work is published and distributed in highly popular illustrated print, Magazines such as vogue & Vanity Fair have been the breeding ground photographic talent for nearly a century, how fashion photography is also closely associated with Model photography, a form of photography where the a person acts as the mannequin to display the fashion garments or accessories, fashion models can themselves become or already be celebrities, putting desirable/ household names to a brand can help with sales circulation & in fashion photography names to brand are at there highest concentration with, Publisher/ magazine, brands/ product manufacturer, fashion/ product designer, photographers & models. In the end fashion photography like the celebrities and the fashion the wear are all a calculated manufactured business, to get into the loop you need the high skill but more importantly you need the connections or the name, many spend large parts of their careers creating that name.

Any professional fashion photographer would work as an associate with a either a designer, brand or magazine, for they would most likely have the equipment, funding and connections to organise proper fashion shoots however, in the days of the internet and social media its not uncommon for less recognised or amature photographers to be approched by small compnys who would be be willing to sponsor a fashion shoot devoted to displaying the company's clothing products and other fashion items with photographs being published either online or elsewhere to act as advertisements. For studio set up a fashion photographer would likely use lighting as a focus in the image, the diverse experimental nature of the fashion photography genre means that variables in the studio are never constant, the amount of equipment in a professional fashion photographer arsenal is as staggering as the number of skills needed from a chief fashion photographer, It helps to have extensive knowledge in the subject one photographs.

Still Life

By David Bailey

Still life is the depiction of inanimate subject matter commonly portrayed as group of objects which for the most part are typically smaller items, still life has been confirmed as the earliest form of photography & has its roots in art of the middle ages, still life is an object based genre of photography which is commenly associated with advertising and both food & product photography however the still life definition allows for infinitely broad possibilities for still life artistic styles.

A still life photographer would utilize a flexible studio setup reflective of the experimental nature of still life, with lighting and backdrop being Modified to the optimum layout which depending on the arrangement of the Item or Objects. The Applications of still life in a commercial setting mostly consists of product photography used in catalogs demonstrating a Brand's/ company's product range in a single image, quit often with a them with an example being a shop showing their seasonal food selection for events like christmas.

...

Analysis on studio

studios versatility allows for a vast portfolio of creative possibilities with many genres & subgenres, a studio photographer would have to develop many skills and would likely have to collaborate with other photographers or companies to make the most out of a career in a studio.

Evaluation

Over the course of this unit I found myself greatly expanding my skills and Knowledge In forms of photography Inside, around & Far beyond the photographic studio. I personally had a fair bit of experience in photographic studios after an previous apprenticeship at clifton so I felt a level of comfort in the idea that I was treading on what I thought was familiar ground however this unit managed to give me the opportunity to learn far more about studio photography outside the niche of family portraiture, I instead found myself learning about more of the ways studio photography is used in the examples of marketing and advertising, learning the digital skills required in a modern photography studio, discovering Influential names in studio photograph, Opportunities to practically apply theory skills in many situations including planning and directing a photographic shoot & Learning through Work experience opportunities.

The vast potential of studio photography and the ways the medium can be applied is truly eye opening, and has given me inspiration for how I could apply myself into the many crafts of studio based image making after the completion of this course.

Unit 25 Brief: City of Bristol

Unit evidence
This unit has one assignment associated with it.
In order to successfully complete this unit you must produce appropriate evidence for all
listed requirements.
Photographic exercises
These exercises are to represent the preparatory work needed before attempting the
assignment:
§ Research a range of images that would be suited to both of the two
themes/genre in order to help you make appropriate decisions –
incorporate on to your Blog.
§ Research previous examples that promote the same/similar
‘product’ and incorporate on to your blog. In both cases analyse
and annotate each indicating where/how your own ideas have been
influenced.
§ Research examples that illustrate specialist areas of studio
photography including: Portraiture, Fashion and Advertising –
incorporate on to your blog and annotate.
§ Research appropriate work of historical and contemporary
photographers.
Photographic assignment
You are to produce images for the following themes:
§ Fashion
§ Advertising
Once you have decided on your approach you must produce a ‘Statement of Intent’ – this
says what you hope and expect to achieve, any initial influences and how you intend
working towards the assignment. While exploring your chosen theme within the topic
remember you should demonstrate your technical skill and knowledge as well as
considering the aesthetic visual aspects of the subject you may wish to convey. An
important aspect of this assignment is the use of your blog to record initial ideas and their
development, through to the final outcome.
Your final assignment will consist of a minimum of four (printed on Photographic Paper
Minimum A4) colour/B&W images for each theme and a number of images not selected.
Finally you are to write a critical evaluation of the completed assignment.

Research Produce a 800 word illustrated essay on a range of specialist areas of studio photography, based on three of the following: § Advertising. § Fashion. § Portraiture § Still Life Your notes should include: § The differences between the specialist areas listed above. § You can – if you wish – make some comparisons with location photography. § Mention Specialist techniques. § Mention Specialist equipment. § Mandatory is Health & safety. You are expected to investigate both historical and contemporary practice in studio photography and to include leading photographers, their images and their influences. Evidence required for assessment: § Research on specialist areas of studio photography. § 800 word Critical Essay § All preparatory Studio work (critiqued and evaluated) § Recorded studio progression (images and tryouts) § Minimum of four printed images for each of the two themes. § Critical evaluation of completed assignment.

Advertising:
Advertising matters. Hundreds of billions of
pounds are spent each year in the attempt to
promote the moving of merchandise. Often the
more creative the approach, the more successful
the advert is in achieving this function. As well as
playing an important part in popular culture,
successful images are increasingly recognised as
an art form all of their own. You are to produce,
as a minimum, a series of four colour images in
the studio that illustrate a creative approach to
advertising a common consumer product of your
choice.

Fashion:
Fashion is about, amongst other things, sexuality,
status symbols, culture, humour, style and of
course people. Recent developments within
fashion photography are less about the detail of
the clothing and more about the selling of an
atmosphere or style. You are to produce, as a
minimum, a series of four colour images that
reflect a contemporary approach to the promotion
of a fashion product, manufacturer or style. You
will need to create images in the studio that have

the impact demanded by this innovative industry.
