Unit 1: Visual Recording (Complete*)

unit 1: visual recording

activity 1: nature and construction

As humans we are surrounded by the natural and the constructed, many photographers have created work evidencing their natural and manufactured surroundings and showing the contrast between the two.

Notes:

John Davies notes: nature which have been built around, the natural landscape in urban areas, the contrast between construction and nature, inspired by his surroundings growing up (farming and mining community), major influence on Andreas Gursky, post imperial & post industrial

John Davies is a British born photographer who specialises in landscape photography with a grate interest in nature and landscape photography. He often takes photos of the surroundings of coal mining and farming communities similar to the ones he grew up around in County Durham during the 1950’s & 60’s and beginning his career in photography in the 1970's when he became fascinated with the landscapes of Ireland and the contrast between sky and land. he takes inspiration from his surroundings and their changing condition and captures the process of the change and what there may have been before. John Davies has made his work and inspiration to budding photographers and defiantly those who want to capture a subtle story and meaning in their image, John Davies work has inspired fellow grate photographers the most famous and prolific being Andreas Gursky arguably the most successful modern photographer. He prominently used film but has taken to using digital cameras and digital editing methods as they became available. A large majority his images are in black and white and taken from a vantage points making the landscapes stretch deep into the photograph. I could see John Davies connection to his past is in essence captured in the images he takes, even though time has changed those places since he was there, his images for many would be like looking back on a golden era which many people especially lower and working class could identify with. I find the use of black and white gives the image its emotion and evoke the feelings of something being lost or the processes of change but also gives the image age and leads you to question the story behind the photo and leads to grater interest in the location.

The landscape above shows a rail network and town settled in a idyllic valley, the image is in black and white from a high up vantage point, there are rocks in the fore ground and valley up-to high horizon line, the graffiti in the foreground make you interpret the image in many different ways, the idyllic nature of the valley is challenged when you see the damage to the rocks in the foreground. the grate expanse of land in the image is of rolling hills, fields and scattered woodland only broken up by urban developments. this makes you think about humans and their relationship with the environment.

The image above depicts a small old church in a grass thicket in the foreground and behind the church is a power plant with the three cooling towers looming ominously over head, the contrast between construction and the natural landscape is highlighted, the industrial site in the background disturbed the foreground image of a church where the dead go to rest in a peaceful country church. the image is likely but its gloomy message of loss of countryside and invasion but there is a strange beautiful in the contrast in the cohabitation of the natural environment an constructed but also see as sad in the way this environment is destroyed.

Andreas Gursky notes: geometric shapes, lines, curves and patterns in architecture, a order and partial symmetry from different vertical viewpoints, grate variation in the use of colour with the use of contrasting and adjacent colours reliance on digital image manipulation post 1990 to enhance and drastically modify the image, sold some of the most expensive photographic prints, educated and became professor at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, work mysterious, expressionless and difficult to interpret or understand.

Andreas Gursky is a highly successful German photographer and member of the Düsseldorf group, who was educated and became professor at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf Arts Academy. He specialises in architecture and landscape whose images have been sold for the largest prices at auctions. His images have a narrative or deeper meaning through the use of geometric shapes and patterns in architecture. When looking through his work there are common trends in techniques and subject matter, I recognise his use of clear lines and patterns in most of his images. When looking though his images I found myself feeling uneasy but I didn’t immediately understand why I found his images so mysterious and at times foreboding but while looking into his image Paris Montparnasse I found a video explain the story behind the image and the ways it can be interpreted but not clearly.
many of Andreas Gurskys works are set up expressionless and difficult to interpret or understand, but to create this effect Gursky try's to get raised prospective on his subjects and is fond of using editing and Photoshop tools to create images that could never be captured in the real world, The Rhine II & Paris Montparnasse are examples of his popular edited works.
The photo above is called Paris montparnasse and is a photo of an apartment complex, the image is composed two different images stitched together in a way that makes the two buildings look like one. You are able to see into each individual room and get a glimpse at the life's of the residence of the building, each window acts like a cell where someone lives and their life is arrange next to many other people. the windows are all in a orderly grid creating a metaphor for human cohabiting.

This image is called Rhine 2 which is an image of the Rhine but edited in such a way that there are no buildings or other obstructions on the horizon, a photo which is physically impossible to achieve.
The image is equally split on the horizon with half being sky and the lower half consisting of grassy flood plains, the Rhine and a pavement/ tarmac path. I find it easy to spot the hallmarks of a Gursky photograph, the use of horizontal lines, a mysterious and hard to interpret, and clever use of image manipulation. though I personally hate the mysterious quality of the image I admire the "less is more" approach Gursky had to the composition of the photograph.

personal photographs

I took many images of the dock but here are some images I took that didn't make the final cut but are worth mentioning along side the final images with many that I preferred to my final photographs but there were reasons that lead me holding them back.

Final photographs

The images of natural and constructed were mostly taken with the idea of capturing both natural and constructed elements in the photographs or have natural and constructed contrasts in the images. this concept of photography was initially inspired from John Davies as it is the same viewpoint he used in his images with line between nature and constructed being very thin.

Constructed

This constructed photograph is of a cobble gutter in the centre of the street, the street is damp from rain fall and autumn leafs fallen off the trees have stuck to the cobbles. The gutter leads the eye up through the picture vertically with the rectangles and geometric shapes present trough out the image. the aim I had when taking the image was to capture the geometric shapes built into the ground.

A image of the identification symbols and lettering on the side of a freight train cart, the steel of the carriage has begun to oxidise and is starting to cover the Identification on the cart. the Image has a shallow depth of field which only leaves a small amount of the lettering in focus, but what is focused in is very clear to the point you can see where the rust reactions are happening. The story of the image was to show the way nature effects a constructed environment, this one showed the natural effect of corrosion on construction materials like steel. The effects of nature on constructed environments are clearly demonstrated in the image, but the image suffers from a too shallow depth of field and a under exposure which can be modified out if needed but ISO modification may have been necessary when taking the original image.

Natural

A image of autumn leafs on a street curb with afternoon sunlight shining through a tree in the background and the autumn leafs in the foreground. This picture I took was taken with the idea of showing the natural progression and change of the seasons in a urban place, the idea was to show the contrast between natural world and constructed environments and the way they coexist. The decayed leafs in the foreground are all that are in direct focus with everything else out of focus, the main issue is the direct light of the sun as it slightly overexposes the left corner of the image but the son was intended to be in the image so the negative effects were worth the sacrifice for the image.

This picture of water droplets on a leaf is a direct representation of nature, the water from the natural precipitation of the water cycle on which the plant needs to maintain its existence and the plant leafs evolved to gutter the water off the leafs. The leaf in the foreground is the only one in focus with the strongest area being the tip covered in water droplets, the background is out of focus but the shapes can be identified as leafs with the issue with the image being there is light noise in the background. The image successfully depicted nature and was composed relatively well with few problems technically with the main complaint being the image isn't that special or standout.

Activity 2: Exploring time through still images

This unit will have me looking at the modification of the lenses exposure time to see how motion and movement can be capture using an camera and how to apply these techniques too. you can freeze motion so that the subject is completely still while longer exposure and lower ISO, the subject would show sines of motion through motion blur.

mind-map

Research

For research I looked at ways time is used in photography and the key ones were:

Long exposure: having a long exposure allows the capture of  light which can have many different effects that can be used.

Motion exposure: when on a long exposure and high sensitivity allows to capture the movement of subjects moving through.

Panning: this is where take a photo of a moving object and follow the subject  with the camera while the subject is moving, this causes the background to be stretchered into motion.

Time-laps: in film a time-laps is footage taken over a large period of time, similar things can be done with photography, as an you can capture the movement of the stars light trails.

low light exposure: this is the capturing of light trails or capturing photos of the night sky (twilight sky)

Time slice/ archive: where you compare a old photograph against the spot it was taken presently.

Photographers

Micheal Wesley

Is a German photographer who operates around the world but sets up a lot of photos around unified Berlin. he uses custom pin hole camera which uses a specialised film that is exposed for an extremely long period of time, this exposure time can be years and captures changes in the subject in the form of ghost-like transparent subjects that  instead of capturing motion blur it captures the subject frozen in different stages of change.

The image above was take over a exposure 2 year period in Berlin during major construction work after the reuniting of the two half's, with the new construction creating a ghost of the building as it is gradually made and exposed onto the film.

The photograph was exposed over the course of few weeks, the image was of a bushel of flowers over the their lifespan, showing the way the plant wilted and withered over time laps.

Francesca Woodman

Francesca was a passionate photographer from 13 to her early death of 22 years. her photos taken in different black and white formats mostly portraying women, with elements of motion captured in her images. The use of motion is used to create emotion and atmosphere that cant easily be interpreted. The movement in her images mostly of the subjects while the rooms used are mostly clear of direct distractions from the subject and used to create atmosphere.

This strange and unnerving image is a room which is in disrepair with a large amount amount of light coming from a open window, beneath the window-sill is the bury shape of a woman. The image is full of interest from the subject to the room itself, the interest of the room is down to the derelict state it is in with bare floor boards covered with wallpaper and plaster that has crumbled off the walls of the room. Even though the room is full of detail it seems empty with the only thing filling the image being the highlighted leg of the woman underneath the window.

This image is of a empty derelict room with a woman in mid jump who is blurred in motion. The image is lit with natural light from left to right and is taken in black and white, so only tones are present. The subject sticks out as she is the darkest object in the room because of the black dress, which adds to the creepy and foreboding atmosphere of the picture.

Alexey Titiarenko

Alexey Titiarenko is a Russian who takes images that capture movement to capture emotion usually with a underling political message. The key subject he uses is his images is the domestic situation in Russia and how government actions effects the people especially after the collapse of the soviet union. the emotion in the images tends to be darker in tone and creating a solemn interpretation of Russian life after soviet collapse.

This long exposure shot is a black and white photograph depicting a horde of people climbing up stairs at an angle towards the camera, the outcome of using long exposures made the crowed of people onto a blur of ghastly specters which gives the photo a solemn and depressing tone. the objects in focus in frame are the street in the background but the area with the most focus in the fore ground is the railings which are being used by the mist of people walking up the stairs with their hands on the rail being the most clear part of the photograph.

This depressing looking picture is a black and white photograph of people at a low vantage point with a long shutter speed making the crowds of walking people into ghostly specters or slightly blurred. The atmosphere of the image is in the long shutter speed with the way it effects motion and the low view point in black and white as the low viewpoint makes everything seem larger and more significant in the image.

Personal images & test images

Group names: Mark, Katrina, Dan, Kyra, Cliff
using the lowest ISO (ISO) and a slow shutter speed (0.10 to 8 seconds) the movement of the subject is captured in the photographs.

This image was of a subject moving a seat from one position to another, this image shows the natural movements of the subject to change position mid exposure. The effect was interesting and looked like it could be used for great effects if set up properly for a photograph.

This image of the subject making sudden lurches towards the camera created the same broken subject effect you would have if you were using a flashing light, the experimental effect is interesting but could be put to better use with more understanding of light.

This was a attempted to capture traveling objects in long exposure but  the effect was underwhelming but still interesting and if there was use of other lighting effects like flashing light the effect would be a lot more interesting.

In this image fore subjects walked over to their assigned seats and walked off again during the exposure time. the effect was surprisingly effective so we took a few attempts.

when using glow sticks during the long exposure they were swinging   and left a pattern where they had been, this movement of light emitting objects made some of the more interesting images, these being some of the first.

This image is of three still light sources and one moving one, this contrast between still and moving light emitting sources became the basis for far better images but the image as it stands alone as a very interesting image.
This is a image of two people holding a chain of glow sticks while simultaneously juggling the chain in the palm of their hands with the outcome being a colorful blur of light which still shows the shape of the glow sticks but replicated many times over, this light show peaked my interest and I experimented with the circumstance the image is taken under.

In this circumstance the chain was held still for a large part of the exposure time of the image and juggled for the remainder, this made it clear what subject I was photographing and still had the colorful blur of when the glow sticks were moved.

These images where experimenting with lighting the subject and using moving light sources which showed potential for further experimental imagery but for other photograph set-ups.

This image has a very interesting stretch of colour of the chain of glow sticks which would have been more interesting if the glow wasn't so dark and under exposed with attempts to recreate the effect failing.

Final images

This image is a photograph of fore people entering and leaving the frame in a long exposure. To set up the image I had fore willing subjects walk over and sit down on fore chairs and after a second they would exit the frame from the direction they entered. the image was shot over 8 seconds and was lit by nature light from the left of the image. I relay Liked this photo because of the way the subjects showed up only as specters making the image seem strange and foreboding in many different ways and also the way it made me think of story's and fictional scenarios behind the image which adds on atmosphere to the nature emotional impact of the image.

This Bizarre light show is a linked chain of differently size and coloured glow-stick bands, which were taken in the dark with a 5 second exposure time. This was a simple image set up, all I needed to do was start the exposure and keep the chain still for a second or two and then start moving it in a clockwise rotation, the outcome of this is part of the image is in clear focus with strange bands of light surrounding the focal point. The reason for choosing the image was just for the way the image turned out as if I hadn't been experimenting with light and the shutter speed I would never have known I would have got this effect.

When taking this image I started the exposure walked over to the seat, sat down and walked back to the camera creating a loop. The outcome being a blur around the chair with three clear forms of a person merging into one mass, the shape on the left can be seen begin to sit down, the second is sat down and the third is getting up to leave the frame. The final effect I initially described as unsettling and slightly disturbing with a lack of possible sub contexts that could be made from it. As a effect it was very interesting and unexpected but the photo suffers from some over exposure yet still the image works on a experimental level.

This was a slimier use of the linked chain of glow-bands but this time they were all dragged out before being moved. One end of the chain was laid down close to the camera the stretched out, with one second of the five seconds exposure spent still and the rest of the time I twisted the chain in random directions which creates a different effect each time I take a image. In this case two links were in clear focus before the movement of the chain creating a glow which reflected off the floor, the rest of the chain multiplied when moved creating many glowing circles which was a interesting effect from a experimental image.

Tom Hunter

Tom Hunter is a British English photographer who operates out of London who specialising in the reference and re-imagining of classical paintings. born in Dorset in 1965 from the London College of Printing in 1994, Tom lived
His photos are modern interpretations of classic art, hunter converts the layout of the paintings into photographs yet incorporates the modern setting identifying the periods the images were taken. his re-imaginings of classic art and adds a underlying message in his images, mostly inspired from his experiences in his home community, Hunter looked at the problems in Hackney in London and portrayed them in his images, he also  wanted to take a picture showing the dignity of squatter life quoting his work as "a piece of propaganda to save my neighborhood".
Tom Hunter, woman reading a possession order 1997 / Netherlands 17th century Vermeer, Girl Reading a Letter

The image Tom Hunter interpreted was the 1659 painting by dutch artist Johannes Vermeer depicting a woman reading a letter next to an open window, the image was taken as reverse proper-gander taking somber tone of emotion interpreted from Vermeer original oil painting, the photograph take depicts a mother and her new born, the same as in the painting and posed in a simmiler way, the difference is time period and the context portrayed, Hunter said the letter is a eviction notice, during his time in Hackney, lots of people were removed from their homes for many different reasons. the photo was detected at the conservative government who were showing a lack of empathy in their policy, creating a issue of class warfare.

Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall is a Canadian artist best known for his photograph and art history writing. he was born and operates out of Vancouver and educated at University of British Columbia, Vancouver and
Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Jeffery wall has been active for over 40 years, born September 29, 1946 to present experiencing the change of a post war world and the cold war which had minor influence on his work.

a sudden gust of wind (after Hokusai) 1993
A sudden gust of wind is a interpretation of travellers caught in a sudden breeze painted by Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai in 1832. The photograph was taken outside Vancouver and was captured in colour. it depicts four figures in the foreground who are frozen mid reaction to a unexpected gust of wind. the evidence of  the wind can be seen by the way the papers have been blown up towards the right of the frame, the two trees on the left third of the image is seen frozen mid sway to the right and the coats and jackets of the figures are also blown to the right. the horizon line fits into the bottom third of the image while the middle and upper thirds dominated by the sky which is cloudy and overcast with the light emitted giving a bluish grey colour on the image.
Jeff Walls photograph replicates the Hokusai painting quite closely. The main subjects in the image act almost identical to the painting and the composition is set up in a very similar way. the subjects in the foreground are acting in a close resemblance to the painting, the four figures are posed in similar ways and are in similar places within the comparison between the photo and the painting. the figure on the far left has his coat blowing in the breeze and is facing the same direction as the figure in the painting, the papers the figure was holding are blowing off in the same direction and on the same angle off the frame to the top right. the two figures near the centre of the frame are in a similar place in the image but are not acting the same way as the figures in the original painting. the  figure on the left third of the frame is in the same place and has a similar reaction to the wind but while the painting has the figure raised the photo has him lower down. the two trees on the left third of the image though not the same species as depicted in the painting they are in the same place and swaying in the same direction from the breeze, the trees when compared to the painting are similar in structure and appearance with the trunks highlighted and leafs being blown off. the differences when comparing the photograph and the painting are in the details, the backdrop of the painting shows a misty grassland with a rode leading off into a mountain and a silhouette of hills that dominate the horizon. the photograph is set on a land bridge over a river with pylons on the right third, farm fields on  the left and the river crossed with bridges in the centre. the horizon of the picture is full of silhouette of trees and buildings in a blue haze, the blue haze is similar to the painting but isn't as clear on the background.

Subject: Hannah Hoch

Hanna Hoch was a feminist and German arts and crafts artist who used collages of images from news articles to make politically charged art in response to the failing Weimar german government and the ways in was operating.
Hoch was born in
Her arts & crafts style is easily identified as the way she uses news and magazine cutouts in her images is unique and stirs the imagination, the messages behind her can be subtle but you can work the out or get a idea what they mean.
the multi-millionaire 1920

The millionaire is a collage of different elements to create a political statement based of sentiments after the great war with the german industrial complex, the image depicts the guns, materials and factories with the ones responsible for them along with them.

Image/ Images taken

The image is of the props I used to replicate the collage's effect of Hanna Hoch's works in a way that their proposes are mostly clear

The text in the top left of this image is clearly visible in this book, giving a idea on what the subject may be about and the messages from the symbols in the images.

This image was a successful Picture which looks good and conveys the message intended when planning the image but I didn't use it because of the landscape format and the way the image didn't have the right level of interest to use.

Final Image

This Image is a close up version of the practice images, chosen for the way it has all the props in the image and  still are presented in the way that you can tell what they may symbolise. The messages in the image are not all apparent but you piece each component of the image together to create your own idea of the meaning of the image. my initial idea that inspired me was the balance between patriotism or national pride of individuals and the views of the establishment and centers of power within the country. It is almost like a person coming to terms on the way things are politically and historically, newly enlightened from ignorance to the things that go on around them and throughout the world. The image on a technical level is not to complex but is interesting due to the composition inside the frame and on the way people can identify from the familiar objects displayed in shot but those who would be most effected would be British citizens as the image would feelings like patriotism. The image isn't edited and could do with tweaks to lighting and colour contrast but the image still works well at its fundamental level.

Activity 4: Breaking the rules

For the breaking rules project I must capture image that don't follow the conventions of normal photography and must break at least one or more of the established rules of photography.

rules:

rule of thirds, is a technique used for composing photographs, the image is divided into 3 by 3 grid which gives a photographer a guideline to avoiding the centre of the image. the rule of thirds is likely the most important technique as it is the way most photographers use to set up photographs
to break this rule I would use up mostly just the central space's while avoiding filling the rest of the thirds from points of interest

active space, allowing the subject have movement in the frame of the image

sharp focused, having the main subject in sharp focus is the thing people most important in the image as the want to see the subject

no shooting into light, shooting into light usually overexposes the image so photographers avoid direct light

correct verticals, keeping the correct lines and parallels are used to structure images on a horizon line

fill the frame, is similar to rule of thirds in the way that you use thirds to have points of interest in each third, putting as much detail

Photographers

Saul Leiter

Saul Leiter was a american photographer who lived from 1923 to 2013, who's work regularly broke conventions of photography, with most of his well known photographic work being taken during the 1940's and 1950's.

"Foot on El," taken 1954

This photo brakes rules by not having a subject in shot but only a small part of them off screen but even though that is the case there is still interest in the image and its composure. The image is of the interior seating of some for a transport through a window, the seats are empty apart from a foot resting on the edge of the seat from the subject who is outside the right edge of the image frame, instead the image is just the empty seats, the lines in the floor and the faint reflection off the window the photo was taken through.

“Street Scene,” taken 1959

This photo is braking the rules of focus and fill frame by photographing a subject from the reflection  of a subjects silhouette in a steamed up window which has it own shapes and silhouettes projected through it. This photos level of rule braking is incredible in the way that there are so many points of interest yet there is almost nothing in the image apart from the silhouette of a man reflected off the window in the far right edge of the image, the rest is the focused image of condensation from the other side of the window which has its own silhouettes and shapes behind it.

Finals

Shooting into light: this image is of a light house near Red-cliff which is photographed in front of a opening in the clouds, though there was no harsh light the effect of the light darkened the subject in the fore-ground. The original effect intended was the sun to act as the light for the light house and though I didn't get the desired effect what I created was still effective as the light house is darker than the sky but not to the point that the light house became a silhouette.

Subject central to image: this image is of a degrading lost property note pinned to a tree, I choose this image because of the textures in the image and the strange circumstance that it had been pined and in such a isolated spot. The the green bark in the background is a interesting surrounding for the note in the centre of the image, the note itself is crumbling away with patches of the writing fallen off making it hard to read, the pins the note was attached to have rusted with the pin at the bottom of the note is no longer attached as the note has disintegrated away. The problem with the image is it was way to dark but adjusting the curve gradient in Photoshop would remove the problem.

Image is angled away from the parallel and verticals, the image of the Red-cliff light house is under exposed but has the intended effect which was to fit the image into a landscape frame. The central point of the light house leans from the bottom right third to the top left third of the image with the centre of the image being filled with the main body of the light house. The background is the grey's and blues of a thinly overcast day, the lack of sunlight when taking the image leaves the image under exposed but it still has the detail in the image that I wanted with very little noise. The image was choose to a some variety to the images in the finals as most of the other images were breaking rules of thirds and fill frame while this image successfully represents breaking correct lines and verticals.

proposal form

A proposal is a document that all photographers and artists will use when they need to present work ideas to a client (commercial context) or apply for funding / present to a panel (art context). It can be hard to put down what you intend to make before you have started working on it, but the most important thing to remember is to try and keep language clear and simple, and to keep your proposal as a live document, i.e. it is OK to change it during your project. Try to write two or three sentences for each section;

What is your idea?

to create images comparing small toy objects their larger counterparts or contrast between the big and the small and create common human scenarios which the small equivalent would attempt to replicate.

What are you intending to make? What will your outcome be?

A portfolio of images showing toys or small mini-figures operating in a set of human environments. this could promote a company and its products showing fun and inventive ways to use them, in doing so inspiring others to do the same.

Who are you intending to research and how and why do they relate to your idea / project?

How miniature replica objects are designed and manufactured and how they are advertised by companies, in doing so understanding how they were intended to be used and the ideal mindset of the consumers.

What are your technical needs and requirements? How do they relate to your idea?

I need my props and the figures from the brand and products that I wish to represent in my images, it would be need to the use of macro techniques

How are you planning your time?

To spend a portion of time researching, a small amount of time setting up the photograph and the rest photographing the designated scenarios.

Final Image

This image is a image depicts star wars characters playing on a x box controller, the situation the troops are in is a parody of the original brand of the figures as its a situation you wold never see a storm trooper from star war's in the movies. The technical aspects of the image aren't the strong point with the depth of field being to shallow and the light over exposes the top corner of the image, the strong point of the image is the entertainment value as when showing the image to other possible viewers of the image the comment responses were how funny the image was and has also been described by others as cute.

Final Unit Evaluation

Whats I have learnt over the time in the Unit, over the course of this unit I have gained a greater understanding about the uses of photograph in a professional and open environment, learning new photographic techniques and experimenting with them to discover new and interesting ways to use them. during the unit I was taut new ways at looking at photograph and the way people used this to their advantage, this then went on to inspire what I do in photography and the way I look at it. I also gained the knowledge of the way a professional photographer would propose and plan their photo shoots and applied the newly gained understanding to create my own planned photographs from personally researched inspiration.
