Unit 5: Contextual Influences in Art and Design

Unit 5: Contextual Influences in Art and Design

Exhibition Reports

London Art Gallery

The exhibit on photography in the London art gallery was of a wide and varied selection of photographs and photographers who focused on different subjects and specifications of the gallery brief for a sequence of associated images that all had a relating narrative or theme. The photographs displayed were projects from well established photographers with work ordered in a neat geometric fashion all over the walls, the room itself was shaped in a H fashion with maximised wall space between them, in the center of each section there was seats and display cabinets which broke up the centers of each room.

overall the London photography exhibition was very organized with each piece of work in it own clearly defined space and arranged with ease of viewing in mind to allow for contemplation of the work in question while also admiring the photographers skill and thought process.

Brizzol 1 Bedminster

Bedminster Arena exhibit was a gallery made up of a Group of mostly local photographers, The setting was the bedminster gallery, a large high ceiling victorian building that was once an industrial facility converted for more trading uses. The building was brightly lit from large windows far up the walls and more tungsten light from powerful ceiling lamps, the building seemed to be split in three distinct sections, the Gallery section to the left when entering the building and Cafe & Shop to the right with a second landing gallery level overlooking the cafe & shop.
the Images of the gallery filled most of the walls and were displayed in different formats and sizes but they were all divided into sets depending on the photographer and their subject, each set of images had the name of the photographer and a summary of the project they created. It was surprising to see the level of variety included in the gallery as photography seemed to be the main connection between all the sets of images. The rout best taken to observe each set of images was to make my way round the gallery clockwise and start with the introduction to the gallery and the photographers whose work was displayed.

Lacock abby: Iceland

Lacock Abby

The photographic gallery exhibition was put together by the photographer Tim Rudman who documented his time spent in ICELAND through a illustrated diary of images

The lower floor was a busy museum on the detailed history of photograph in what can only be described as a modernised rustic conversion of a medieval Barn, however the first indication of the gallery on Iceland was a larger cropped version of the outside banner hanging down from the top of the conversion above the stairs to the top of the conversion, the carvers depicted a volcanic mountain which was shrouded in ice and cloud with the name ICELAND in custom font printed at the base of the mountain to the deep landscape rolling from the foot of the image.

when one first walks up the stairs they are greeted with a large portrait art block depicting a tonal filtered image of a Icelandic church cross at twilight. The image is spotlit so when one walks up the stairs all of ones attention is focused upon it making one ponder about meanings and mythology behind the landscape.

the landing area contained the title of the gallery and the photographer Tim Rudman

benches by the banisters are placed and were used for long, contemplative examination of the images displayed in the cabinets

at the end of the cabinet's and landing section there was an open space with a bench and table with a map of Iceland showing the rout Tim took when exploring the landscape, a diary written by Tim of his time spent in Iceland shares the table with the map

The photographs on displayed in the cabinets came in series of three relevant and related images

images of landmarks & iconic imagery around Iceland

the top row of photographs depicts lines carved into the landscape while the lower row depicts evidence of Icelandic fishing culture

A Book Review:

Reviewing a book on a photographer or artist

David Bailey: Jackie Higgins, PHAIDON

The book I've choose to review is on the photographer and mixed media artist David Bailey who is a famous is a British fashion, Portrait and Art photographer who took iconic photos of celebrities during the 1960's to present day and is also well known for his varied experimentation with photography. The book written in concern of David Bailey was written by a specialist photographic analysts who works as a experienced freelance writer and producer who has a passion for a broad spectrum of photography form all time periods and all corners of the globe a suggested in her projects on nineteenth century photography and Japanese contemporary photography. The publisher PHAIDON is a London & new York publishers who is well know for publishing the work of photographers of all theme's, the art's and architecture and associates closely with prolific names from around the world who are experts in their fields, the brand prides itself on its association to its vast published archive of the visual arts and being one of the most prolific in the field of arts publishings.

The book itself as an object is a small minimalist, square folio which is quite thick and uses a black veneered cardboard with inlayed title information in neutral tonal colour scheme, this is covered by a protective cover jacket that has one of David Bailey's images on the front cover which depicts a 2001 black and white photograph of David Bailey's son in a somewhat cheeky and eye catching image of a shuttered shop with a white arrow painted pointing left with the word LOOK in clear large text painted just above, a boy in somewhat classic London "pick pocket" attire instead is looking the opposite direction with a mischievous look on his face, this sets a good tone for the rest of the book as it shows some of the iconic David Bailey dynamic emotion and signature personality in his images, it also makes a distinct and eye-catching cover photo as the arrow acts like a tempting instruction to fulfil your curiosity by looking at its contains.

The inside covers give small amount of detail on David Bailey and what could be expected from the folio and some details on the writer. The "importance" and development of David Bailey and his legacy are the first things introduced in the book directly from Jackie Higgins point of view with heavily opinionated while also being impartial when explaining sustain aspects of his life and exploits, while giving background and history on Bailey's growth as a photographer and included his inspiration, motivation, progression and evolution as a photographer and as a person Higgins links page numbers to photos associated with the subject focused on during the timeline in  biography section of the book for reference so readers can find the image and follow the story of baileys progression with option to use illustrated reference's to what Higgins is writing about.
The Biography portion in the book partially works as a timeline explaining Bailey's journey but each phase of his life has references to the way it effected his later works and techniques while also comparing the early Bailey and the later Bailey bace on life experiences, techniques and work produced and published which creates a in-depth personality synopsis of Bailey and his Photography. In the photographic portfolio section of the book Higgins creates a timeline from Baileys very first published works with all the familiar and relevant images taken throughout his career to the present, each image has a caption which gives technical analysis and interpretation of the image while giving some history and backstories of each image. The descriptions use a lot of technical language and reference the history of not just the images but also the technical history behind the techniques used in certain images which is likely a byproduct of Higgins technical fascination with the history of photography.

Once through the meat of the book which was the photos and their captions and analysis you come to an index timeline of the name and date of each image throughout the book. overall the book gave a good diverse selection of David's photographic work which also showed the evolution in photograph over the period of fifty years, demonstrating a vars and divers array of examples of classic film, colour film & digital photography, Jackie Higgins also gave a fair Biography and synopsis on Bailey, his career and photographic works with a mostly clear flowing narrative following the career of David Bailey though Higgins may sell Bailey on eccentricities a few times too many but overall Higgins used her specialist knowledge to create a very interesting and well organised book for a folio of a prolific photographer.
