Unit 3: Ideas & Concepts (Complete*)

due-in 8th December

Unit 3: Ideas & Concepts

Trainers: Ages 16-24

for this unit I must create photos that promotes a shoe and its brand

Mind Map of Ideas

Research Images and Inspiration

Practical Photos

set up the photograph to have the shoe seemingly looking off into the horizon and the sunset.  The points of interest are both in the foreground and the background, giving the image a great depth.  The trainers, as subjects, are in focus and can be identified by their brand name and logo which are also in focus.  The lighting in the foreground and mid-ground is consistent although slightly too dark, while the sunset in the background is slightly over-exposed.  However, the colours in the sky and the contrast with the clouds greatly add to the image and its depth of field.

This photograph was set up using the beach as a framing device in order to highlight the trainers. The focus of the image is predominantly on the shoes with the key focus points being the branding and the foreground which includes seaweed and brown toned stones.

I captured this photograph to introduce a sense of calm in the image in order to emphasis the brand's ideas of  free spirit and the youthful laid-back mindset of its ideal consumer base.  The image is looking off into the great expanse of the sea with the focus in the foreground.   The shoes are on high ground giving a interesting prospective of the shoreline falling away towards the horizon.

This image highlights the differing textures and how the shoe contrasts with the driftwood.  The whole of the image is filled with objects of detailed interest, with the main focus being the brand's name and logo giving the trainer its identity.  The image is full of textures, with good lighting and depth of field.

In this photograph the trainers dominate the foreground of the image, with the driftwood fence and sunset in the background.  The maritime setting of the photograph is clear from the stones, driftwood and the haze of the sea on the horizon.  The emphasis is on the contrasting colour and texture of the light canvas shoes against the dark stony ground.

SELF PORTRAITS (SELFIES)

The selfie is a common way of capturing a self portrait made commonplace with the improvement of cameras on mobiles and smart phones, with a increasingly vain mindset population there use continues to increase with people being more creative withe the way they use them and convey their personality and emotions.

7 days in the life (?)

there are 7 images left in a camera depicting someones life, what are the images and what do they tell about that person. I need to depict my life or tell something about myself with the use of 7 images. though the week I must take the equivalent of a image a day

images example

(moodle)

plan

7 days photographs

Day 1
day one image was of a persons hobby or pastime of gaming by the image of a head set and controller.

day 2
on day two we find out that the person may be a aspiring artist of some form or another with a image of what look likes a sketch book.

day 3
day three depicts construction toy built into a military vehicle showing a bit more of the persons personality showing a possible creative mindset.

day 4
on day fore the image is a out of place with a photograph of shoes belonging to the taker of the images.

day 5
day five is a photo of the reflection of the owner of the camera and glimpses of part of the photographer.

day 6
on day six there is a image of a bathroom utility rack filled with all the photographers utility's for getting ready for the day and we see his face blurred in the reflection of the mirror.

day 7
the last image for day seven is of the photographers eyes and head captured upside-down outdoors somewhere in a urban center.

portraits

I need to create a portrait which doesn't follow normal standards, in other words a strange or weird portrait which can be as quirky as I like but I have a slight focus on shutter priority in the images.

mind-map

research

using slow shutter-speed the photographer has captured the movement of the subject while capturing the face and all its features clearly.

the subject is the main focus of this image with the background in pitch black, highlighting only the subject in the center of the image.

this portrait breaks the norm by having the subject in a odd situation and include movement of water in the image, from a water balloon that had hit the subject.

this long exposure portrait had the subject creating a bizarre and frankly unsettling visuals.

this image depicts what can be done while painting with light to create art in a way only a camera could pick up, the art highlights the subject and make the image much more interesting.

a more simple attempt of painting with light during long exposure for a group portrait.

own images

this image is of a subject reflected of a mirror, the subject in question is wearing a mask hiding their identity.

an image of a individual captured through a circular optic distorting the face of the subject.

final image

the image of the a person putting on a mask reflected in a mirror which has been converted to black and white to highlight red left in the image.

strength & weakness

capture images that capture forms of strength and forms of weakness. there are positives and negatives in strength and weakness for example, a new born baby is weak when born but that's not considered bad while a strong solderer preparing for combat isn't considered a good thing. most the time however strength is portrayed as good while weakness is mostly bad, but in photograph you can capture things in different prospective and change the way people perceive them.

mind-map

examples:

strength

looking at the strengths of humanity is good as it can be easily relatable
capturing the power of nature and a the strengths of human ingenuity (example: engineering)
soldiers have to be strong mentally and physically to fulfil his role and duty's, but are they good?
though not a photograph the images use of scales using weight as a measurement of strength inspires
"... for the nation of nations, queen and country", patriotism is a grate way to find ones strengths

weakness

people and the human condition can be considered weaknesses
the effects of time is considered a weakness to us as we fear mortality, as mortality effects all things
evidence toil, struggle and hardship are often shown as weakness but also as strength
indulgence (greed), vanity or the braking of other morals are weaknesses, but are they all wrong?
relatable or unrelatable situations that cant always be controlled can be shown as weakness

personal images + analyses.

an abandoned bottle submerged in mud
an image open to interpretation, a person with head within their hands
silhouette of me lifting a branch over my head showing a simple way to show strength
a broken branch of wood
an oxidising wire which has been weakened over time by rust but has stood the test of time
the image signifies temptation with the strengths and weaknesses that come with it
a weather front rolling in from the west
a old rusted windscreen wiper covered in webs and dirt
bending a stick with a decaying leaf on it
silhouette of a person (my self) lifting a driftwood branch
an oxidised wire vent cover
litter near the coast. a bottle of water is abandoned by its owner

activity - Durex group work

To create awareness of STDs we were given a brief to create ads or posters creating awareness of the dangers of sex with the target audience being 16 to 24 year olds
• work in Ad teams
• 45 minutes to come up with your ideas.
 • You need to nominate spokespersons for your team.
 • With your teams help you need to pitch your idea to the Durex Marketing team, this will take probably about two or three minutes.
• The rest of the class was the Durex Marketing team.
• After all pitches have taken place there was a vote from the class to see who has won the contract.
• A small prize will be awarded to the team who secures the contract.

The brief

The brief was to work in small advertisement groups to create a condom ad with our own assigned message, image and slogan. each group would have to come up with their own ideas and poster explaining their idea, depending on if it was to do with product or service. we choose a christmas theme as it was mid winter when we started the project & there were a lot of good puns and innuendo that could be used.

Poster One: depicts a christmas tree with presents that have been covered with a condom, the slogan is wrap up this christmas which is a play on the statement used when it is cold in winter
Poster Two: depicting a familiar shape wrapped in christmas paper with a bow with the tongue and cheek slogan don't be a pesant wrap your present

I worked on the mind-map of ideas and plans to help organise the group and document the groups though the planning phase. I also made some sketches of ideas we could use for a poster.

Evaluation: This was a bizarre and embarrassing task which took a long time to organise the groups we were assigned into but the final outcome of the group was successful yet it was a difficult sell for our representative but they did a good job. The time given was to short a 45 minuets didn't give us the opportunity to adjust to working in our group and complete the task at a high standard but we did our best with the time allocated.
